Iroquois Confederacy established

The Iroquois Confederacy, or Iroquois League, was founded as a cooperative and peacekeeping organization among the Five Nations of the Iroquois—Mohawks, Oneidas, Onandagas, Cayugas, and Senecas. In the early eighteenth century the Tuscaroras joined the confederation.

Sacagawea

Sacagawea (1788–1812), a Shoshone woman, joined the Lewis and Clark expedition when her husband, Toussaint Charbonneau, was hired as a guide. She also served as a guide and, more importantly, as an interpreter, translating between the expedition and native groups they encountered.
