Sir Francis Drake (ca. 1540–1596) was an English admiral and explorer—the first to survive a complete circumnavigation of the globe. (Magellan’s expedition circumnavigated some sixty years earlier but Magellan himself died before its completion.) Drake’s circumnavigation was completed in 1580, and in 1581 he was knighted for the accomplishment by Queen Elizabeth I. Later, Drake served as the mayor of Plymouth and a member of Parliament.
