Benjamin Butler

Benjamin Butler (1818–1893) was an American politician and a Union general during the Civil War. During the 1850s, Burnside served as a Democrat in the Massachusetts state legislature. Zora Neale Hurston

Zora Neale Hurston (ca. 1891–1960) was a writer and anthropologist associated with the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s. Hurston grew up in Eatonville, Florida, the first incorporated African American town in the nation. Hurston published her first short story in 1921, while still a student at Howard University. In 1925, Hurston received a scholarship to Barnard College and moved to New York City, where she joined other black writers and artists in the Harlem Renaissance. Huey Long

Huey Long (1893–1935), a former governor of Louisiana, served in the US Senate from 1932 to 1935. Long gained followers championing his “Share the Wealth” plan in the 1930s. He argued that Roosevelt’s New Deal did not go far enough and advocated the redistribution of personal wealth through the government as well as anti-monopoly law and banking reform. In September 1935, as he was planning a presidential run for the next year, Long was assassinated at the Louisiana State Capitol.

Louisiana

Louisiana was claimed for France by René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle in 1682. In the early eighteenth century,while the French struggled to create permanent settlements in the territory, but they did establish New Orleans in 1718. The territory changed hands throughout the history of the Americas. The Spanish gained control over it in 1762 and ceded it back to the French in 1800. The territory was finally bought by the United States in 1803through Thomas Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase.
