British colony established
The first British colony, granted to Sir Walter Raleigh, was established on Roanoke Island. Most settlers returned to England in 1586, however, under threat of a Spanish raid. A few settlers remained to defend the settlement, but none survived.

John White in Roanoke
John White, sent by Sir Walter Raleigh, arrived in Roanoke with supplies and a new group of colonists. White departed after only a month, leaving about 120 settlers at Roanoke while he returned to England for more supplies and additional colonists. The colony was deserted when White returned in 1590.

William Tecumseh Sherman
William T. Sherman (1820–1891) was an important strategist and Union general during the American Civil War. Sherman graduated from West Point in 1840. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he did not see military action in the Mexican-American War. In 1859 he served as the superintendent of the Louisiana Military Seminary. Sherman left Louisiana when the state seceded from the Union in 1861 and was commissioned as a colonel in the Army.
