Joseph Smith founded the Mormon Church.
A mob stormed the Carthage, Illinois, jail, and murdered Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon Church. Smith and his brother, who was also killed, were being held for destroying the printing press of a dissident who had attacked the practice of polygamy.
Under the leadership of Brigham Young, Mormons emigrated to the Salt Lake Valley to establish the religious state of Deseret.
President Buchanan sent a command to Utah to install a non-Mormon governor in what was known as the “Mormon War.” The Mormon War (or Utah War) was a confrontation between the Mormon people in the Utah Territory and the government of the United States.
