The Organization of American States was created in 1947 by the Rio Pact. This was the first major Cold War alliance, allying much of Latin America, the United States, and Canada, with the objectives of preventing Communism and improving conditions in Latin America. The OAS addresses the common economic, social, and defense concerns of its members.
