King Philip’s War
King Philip’s War began as a result of pressures exerted on the native New England population by settlers who wanted to subject them to colonial control. Hostilities ranged from Connecticut to New Hampshire. The war ended the following year with Metacomet, the Wampanoag leader called “Philip” by the English, being drawn and quartered and many of his followers sold into slavery. It was one of the bloodiest and costliest wars in North America, and its effects on Indian life in New England were devastating.
