Henry Bibb
Henry Bibb (1815–1854) was a former slave who became a well-known abolitionist. Bibb escaped from slavery in Kentucky twice but was recaptured both times when he returned to free his wife and daughter. After being transferred among several owners, he finally escaped slavery for good in 1841. Harriet Beecher Stowe
Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896) was an abolitionist writer and author of the 1852 novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Stowe was born into the prominent religious and intellectual Beecher family. She began her writing career in 1839 after marrying the Reverend Calvin Stowe in Cincinnati. Anne Bradstreet (ca. 1612–1672) was an English Puritan who sailed with her family to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. Bradstreet became the first woman published in England and America with the release of The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America in 1650. Her work often dealt with religious and domestic themes.

Phillis Wheatley (1753–1784) was the first African American woman writer to be published. She was taken from Africa as a child and enslaved in Boston by the Wheatley family.
