John I
Ruler of Portugal (1358–1433) from 1385 to 1433, King John I completed the Reconquista in Portugal through the capture of the Islamic seaport of Ceuta in 1415 and united the kingdom. He then launched Portugal on a course of Atlantic exploration, employing his youngest son, Prince Henry (the Navigator), to begin a systematic process of charting the Atlantic coast of Africa.
