After the overthrow of King James II in England, American colonists rebelled and royal governors were removed in several colonies. Militia officer Jacob Leisler became governor of New York, but he was hanged for treason in 1691 when royal authority was reinstated.

James Blair (1656–1743) was the Scottish Anglican clergyman who founded the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Blair left Scotland for North America after being removed from his parish for refusing to take an oath of support for the Catholic James II.
