Ann Lee (1736–1784), known as “Mother” Ann, was the leader of the Shakers, a separatist religious sect. Lee and a group of followers immigrated to America from England in search of freedom from religious persecution in 1774. Lee settled near Albany and traveled throughout New England, gaining converts for the Shakers until her death in 1784.
