Vasco Nuñez de Balboa
Vasco Nuñez de Balboa (1475–1517) was a Spanish conquistador and explorer who was the first European to see the Pacific Ocean. Balboa first went to the New World in 1500 and spent several years on Hispaniola. In 1509, he founded the settlement of Darien and soon led a journey across Panama. By 1513, Balboa had crossed the isthmus and become the first European to reach the Pacific.
