Gilbert Tennent began preaching

Gilbert Tennent, the son of religious leader William Tennent, became pastor of the Presbyterian Church in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He soon met and was inspired by Dutch Reformed minister Theodorus Frelinghuysen, who emphasized piety and conversion in his sermons. Both Tennent and Frelinghuysen stirred religious fervor and revivalism among their congregations.

Gilbert Tennent

Gilbert Tennent (1703–1764) was a Presbyterian revivalist and son of the preacher William Tennent Sr. Gilbert immigrated to North America from Ireland with his parents in 1718. He was educated at his father’s Log College. Tennent experienced a religious conversion in 1723 and began a successful career as a popular revivalist preacher, serving primarily in New Jersey. William Tennent Sr.

William Tennent Sr. (1673–1746) was a Presbyterian minister and the father of the revivalist ministers Gilbert Tennent, William Tennent Jr., and John Tennent. Tennent was ordained by the Church of Ireland and moved to North America in 1718. He eventually settled in Pennsylvania. In 1725, Tennent established the Log College, a training college for Presbyterian ministers and precursor to Princeton University that produced many religious leaders during the period referred to as the Great Awakening.
