The Bonus Army was comprised of thousands of World War I veterans who marched on Washington, DC, in 1932. They demanded the payment of their bonuses as relief from economic hardship. The bonuses were scheduled to be paid in 1945, but the veterans were struggling with the harsh economic conditions of the Great Depression. As many as 15,000 veterans marched to the nation’s capital as part of the Bonus Army. Congress declined to approve the bonus bill.
