The Treaty of Ghent, signed by American and British diplomatic representatives on December 24, 1814, at Ghent, Belgium, brought a technical end to the War of 1812. The treaty returned both nations to the pre-war status quo, calling for all captured territory to be returned to the country that had possessed it before the war.
