Mary Rowlandson
Mary Rowlandson (ca. 1637–1711) was taken and held captive by Narragansett Indians in Massachusetts during King Philip’s War in 1676. She later wrote an account of the ordeal, The Soveraignty & Goodness of God, Together with the Faithfulness of His Promises Displayed; Being a Narrative of the Captivity and Restauration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, which was first published in 1682 and ran through more than thirty editions to become a classic of American colonial literature.
