 rsity\n \n 	Overview\n \n 	This seminar explores h
 ow an economically and politically powerless racia
 l minority wrested dramatic change from a determin
 ed and entrenched white majority in the American S
 outh. It will examine the changing nature of prote
 st from the 1940s to the 1950s\; the roles of Mart
 in Luther King Jr.\, local movements\, and women\;
  and the relative importance of violence and non-v
 iolence. Participants will discuss how they can us
 e the experiences of schoolchildren\, teachers\, a
 nd students in the crises of the 1950s and 1960s t
 o bring home the realities of the Civil Rights Mov
 ement in the classroom. Topics include the Little 
 Rock 9 and their teachers in 1957\, students and s
 it-ins\, and the use of schoolchildren in the 1963
  Birmingham demonstrations.\n \n 	\n 		Readings\n 
 	\n 		Readings are sent by the Institute to semina
 r participants. Readings may include:\n 	\n 		Badg
 er\, Anthony\, and Brian Ward. The Making of Marti
 n Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement. New Y
 ork: New York University Press\, 1997.\n 	\n 		Pay
 ne\, Charles\, and Steve Lawson. Debating the Civi
 l Rights Movement. Boston: Rowman &amp\; Littlefie
 ld\, 1998.\n \n \n 	\n 		Travel &amp\; Accommodati
 ons\n 	\n 		Applicants who are accepted are expect
 ed to arrange their own travel.\n 	\n 		The city o
 f Cambridge is in the southeast of England\, fifty
  miles north of London. It is well served by road 
 and rail links\, and is within an easy distance of
  the major London airports.\n 	\n 		The Clare Coll
 ege&nbsp\;website will provide you with comprehens
 ive directions\, as well as city and college maps.
 \n 	\n 		Workshop participants will be housed in o
 n-campus residence halls. Participants will have s
 ingle bedrooms but will share bathrooms and common
  space on each floor. Some participants may choose
  to bring laptops. The college provides sheets and
  towels only. Please note that participants should
  plan to bring fans\, shower shoes\, alarm clocks\
 , shampoo\, hangers\, irons\, hair dryers\, etc. P
 articipants will have access to computer clusters\
 , but many choose to bring laptops and ethernet co
 rds.\n \n \n 	\n 		Meals\n 	\n 		Meals will be ser
 ved in a college cafeteria in space shared by othe
 r programs. All on-campus meals will be paid for b
 y the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History
 .\n \n \n 	\n 		Travel reimbursement\n 	\n 		Parti
 cipating teachers will receive a stipend of $500 t
 o help offset travel expenses. All participants mu
 st attend all workshop sessions to receive full st
 ipends. Participants who do not complete the entir
 e seminar will receive a reduced stipend. We will 
 present stipend checks to participants prior to th
 e end of the seminar.\n 	\n 		Stipends are taxable
