SUMMARY:A Visual Approach to Teaching American History\, J
 uly 14–20
DESCRIPTION:\n Director\n \n \n Jennifer Keene\, Professor
  and Chair\, History Department\,&nbsp\;Chapman Un
 iversity\n \n Overview\n \n This seminar wil
l examine how to use visual evidence to recapture
essential debates at five critical moments in Amer
ican history: the Civil War\, the Progressive Era\
, the Great Depression\, World War II\, and the Ci
vil Rights Movement. Americans have always used im
ages to communicate with one another. Images are n
ot merely illustrations of history. They are essen
tial primary source documents. Images have shaped
American history\, influencing both the course of
events and our historical memory. Critically analy
zing a document requires practice and skill\; the
same is true for using images effectively as windo
ws on the past. Teaching visually involves context
 ualizing paintings\, photographs\, advertisements\
, political cartoons\, and films in their historic
al moment\, uncovering the story of their creation
and reception\, analyzing how they capture the es
sence of the national debate underway at a particu
lar historical moment\, and seeing how their meani
ng changes over time. Properly analyzing images al
so requires linking them to the documents of the e
ra. Teaching visually is not a path to reading les
s\, it is a way to expand our understanding of how
images have shaped history and the historical rec
 ord.\n \n \n Readings\n \n Readings are
