 or David Kennedy examines the experience of the Am
 erican people in the Great Depression and World Wa
 r II. Lecture topics include the origins and impac
 t of the Great Depression\; the nature and legacy 
 of the New Deal\; the military and diplomatic dime
 nsions of American participation in World War II\;
  and the war&rsquo\;s impact on American society. 
 Special attention will be given to the historical 
 debate about the Depression&rsquo\;s causes\; Amer
 ica and the Holocaust\; the wartime internment of 
 Japanese-Americans\; and the use of atomic bombs a
 gainst Japan.\n 	\n 		\n 			Readings\n 		\n 			Rea
 dings are sent by the Institute to seminar partici

 ravel &amp\; Accommodations\n 		\n 			The Stanford
  campus is located in California between San Franc
 isco and San Jose in the heart of Silicon Valley. 
 Its 8\,180 acres reach from the rural foothills of
  the Santa Cruz Mountains to the bustling Stanford
  Shopping Center in Palo Alto.\n 			\n 			Stanford
  is roughly equidistant from the San Jose and San 
 Francisco airports. There are many shuttle compani
 es providing transportation from both\, and taxis 
 serve the Stanford campus as well. You can also re
 ach the University Avenue Station in Palo Alto via
  the&nbsp\;Cal Train. To do this take the #65 bus 
 from San Jose Airport to Santa Clara Station\, or 
 the SFO Cal Train Shuttle from San Francisco Airpo
 rt to Millbrae.\n 			\n 			Stanford University&nbs
 p\;provides detailed driving instructions\, as wel
 l as further advice on public transportation and t
 he university&rsquo\;s own shuttle system\,&nbsp\;
 Marguerite.\n 			\n 			Workshop participants will 
 be housed in on-campus dormitories. Participants w
 ill be provided with bedding and towels only. Plea
 se note that participants should plan to bring ala
 rm clocks\, hangers\, irons\, shampoo\, hair dryer
 s\, kitchen utensils\, etc. Every room is equipped
  with an Internet connection\, but cables are not 
 provided. Participants will have access to compute
 r clusters\, but many choose to bring laptops.\n 	
 \n 	\n 		\n 			Meals\n 		\n 			Meals will be serve
 d in a university cafeteria in space shared by oth
 er programs. All on-campus meals will be paid for 
 by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American Histor
 y.\n 	\n 	\n 		\n 			Travel Reimbursement\n 		\n 	
 		Each summer seminar participant will receive rei
 mbursement of travel expenses up to $400.&nbsp\;Pa
 rticipants are responsible for making their own tr
 avel arrangements to and from the seminar.\n 			\n
  			Participants traveling internationally or from
  Alaska and Hawaii receive a $500 stipend in lieu 
 of reimbursement upon completion of the seminar.\n
  			Applicants to seminars should note that supple
 ments will not be given in cases where the $400 al
 lowance is insufficient to cover all travel expens
 es.\n 			Our reimbursement policy has changed from
