SUMMARY:The American Revolution\, July 14–20
DESCRIPTION:\n Director\n \n Gary B. Nash\,&nbsp\;Professor
and Director\, National Center for History in the
 Schools\,&nbsp\;University of California\, Los Ang
 eles\n \n Overview\n \n This seminar will procee
d from two premises: 1) that the Revolution had ma
ny meanings to its diverse participants\; and 2) t
hat its causes\, dynamics\, and outcomes have been
interpreted and reinterpreted ever since. Therefo
re\, we will read secondary works of various histo
rians who have disagreed sharply on how to interpr
et the American Revolution\; and we will examine a
variety of primary documents through which we can
better understand how people at the time understo
od what they were fighting for and what outcomes t
hey hoped to enjoy. &ldquo\;Who shall write the hi
story of the American Revolution?&rdquo\; wrote Jo
hn Adams to Thomas Jefferson (in 1815). &ldquo\;No
 body\,&rdquo\; Jefferson replied\, &ldquo\;except
merely its external facts . . . The life and soul
of its history must be forever unknown.&rdquo\; Al
 most two centuries later\, let&rsquo\;s discover t
he answers to that question for ourselves.\n \n \
