SUMMARY:Remaking America: The Social and Political History
  of the Civil War Era\, July 21–27

 vania\n 	\n 		Overview\n 	\n 		This seminar focuse
 s on the era of the American Civil War and especia
 lly on the revolutionary transformation of social 
 and political life in that critical period of US h
 istory. Using an array of historical documents as 
 well as lectures\, discussions\, and visits to his
 torical sites\, seminar members will analyze the w
 ay a war of unprecedented scope drove a process of
  state building and slave emancipation that reconf
 igured the nation and remade the terms of politica
 l membership in it. Starting with the Supreme Cour
 t&rsquo\;s decision in the&nbsp\;Dred Scott&nbsp\;
 case in 1857 and ending with the constitutional am
 endments of the postwar period\, we take up the ke
 y events and developments in the Union and the Con
 federacy\, including secession\, the destruction o
 f slavery (on plantations and in the law)\, Africa
 n American enlistment\, and popular politics in th
 e North and South. By focusing throughout on the r
 acial and gender terms of citizenship\, the semina
 r makes clear what changed&mdash\;and what did not
 &mdash\;in American political life\, while conveyi
 ng a sense of the epic drama by which the United S
 tates was remade in the vortex of war.\n 	\n 		\n

 veral options for traveling to and from the Univer
 sity of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. For more inf

 ational Airport is located approximately twenty mi
 nutes from the University of Pennsylvania. There a
 re several&nbsp\;options for transportation&nbsp\;
 from the airport to the university.\n 		\n 			Work
 shop participants will be housed at an on-campus d
 ormitory. Participants will have single bedrooms\,
  but share bathrooms and common space. Dormitories
  are air-conditioned. Wireless Internet service is
  provided. Several computer clusters and lounges a
 re available in the complex. Some participants cho
 ose to bring laptops. Participants will be provide
 d with a temporary wireless access codes.\n 		\n 	
 		The university provides pillows\, blankets\, she
 ets\, and towels only. Please note that participan
 ts should plan to bring alarm clocks\, hangers\, i
 rons\, hair dryers\, and shower shoes.\n 	\n 	\n 	
 	\n 			Meals\n 		\n 			Meals will be served in a u
 niversity cafeteria in space shared by other progr
 ams. All on-campus meals will be paid for by the G
 ilder Lehrman Institute of American History.\n 	\n
  	\n 		\n 			Travel Reimbursement\n 		\n 			Each s
 ummer seminar participant will receive reimburseme
 nt of travel expenses up to $400.&nbsp\;Participan
 ts are responsible for making their own travel arr
 angements to and from the seminar.\n 		\n 			Parti
 cipants traveling internationally or from Alaska a
 nd Hawaii receive a $500 stipend in lieu of reimbu
 rsement upon completion of the seminar.&nbsp\;Appl
 icants to seminars should note that supplements wi
 ll not be given in cases where the $400 allowance 
 is insufficient to cover all travel expenses.&nbsp
