Robertson\, Associate Professor of History\, Lehman College\, The City University of New York and the Graduate Center\n \ n Overview\n \n Madison and the Founding Era wil l examine the American Revolution from an Atlantic perspective\, looking at ideas and events that sh aped the views of the American colonists and the B ritish. We will consider the American Revolution a s two revolutions\, each with its own critical imp ortance in American and global history. The first revolution\, 1775 to 1783\, was the War for Indepe ndence. The second\, 1776 to the present\, is the struggle to live up to the principles of the Decla ration of Independence. We will look at the critic al issues facing the new American republic at the Philadelphia Convention of 1787 and the compromise s that generated broad support for ratification of the Constitution.\n \n Readings\n \n Readings a re sent by the Institute to seminar participants. New York: Vintage Books\, 1993.\n \n \n T ravel &\; Accommodations\n \n James Madison& rsquo\;s Montpelier is located four miles south of Orange\, Virginia\, forty-five minutes north of C harlottesville\, and two hours south of Washington \, DC. For more information\, visit the Montpelier website.\n \n Workshop participants will be ho used at Constitutional Village. The Constitutional Village at Montpelier is spread out over four res tored farmhouses constructed in the early twentiet h century. The houses are within walking distance of Lewis Hall\, where all lectures\, discussions\, and meals will take place during the program.\n \n The houses in the Constitutional Village prov ide an ideal space for conversing after program ac tivities and relaxing late into the evening. All h ouses offer a lounge area and patios or porches wh ere seminar participants can congregate. Each hous e has kitchen or kitchenette facilities\, includin g refrigerators\, microwaves\, sinks\, coffee pots \, and toaster ovens. Most of the houses have comp lete kitchens\, including a full-size stove. Some light snacks and beverages are provided. Each hous e has at least two telephones. Sheets and towels a re provided. In keeping with the spirit of the Con stitutional Village as a center for learning and t houghtful inquiry\, televisions are not provided\, in order to encourage seminar participants to use their free time for study\, reflection\, and conv ersation with their housemates.\n \n \n \n Meal s\n \n Meals will be served at James Madison&rs quo\;s Montpelier. All meals will be paid for by t he Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.\n \n \n \n Travel Reimbursement\n \n Each sum mer seminar participant will receive reimbursement of travel expenses up to $400. Participants are r esponsible for making their own travel arrangement s to and from the seminar.\n \n Participants tr aveling internationally or from Alaska and Hawaii receive a $500 stipend in lieu of reimbursement up on completion of the seminar. Applicants to semina rs should note that supplements will not be given in cases where the $400 allowance is insufficient to cover all travel expenses.
