Lectures \, readings\, discussions\, and other activities w ill cover all of the major moments in American for eign policy since 1898: the Spanish-American War\, the First World War\, the Second World War\, the origins of the Cold War\, the Korean War\, the Vie tnam War\, the end of the Cold War\, and recent co nflicts in Yugoslavia\, Afghanistan\, Iraq\, and L ibya. The workshop will focus on a number of major conceptual issues\, including: national security\ , imperialism\, decolonization\, nation-building\, democratization\, and fiscal (in)solvency.\n \n \n Readings\n \n Readings are sent by the Ins titute to seminar participants. Please check back soon for a list of readings.\n \n \n \n Travel &\; Accommodations\n \n The \;Austin-Ber gstrom International Airport \;(AUS) is locate d in southeast Austin on Texas Hwy. 71\, eight mil es from downtown. There are several options for&nb sp\;shuttle and taxi service \;from the airpor t to campus.\n \n Workshop participants will be housed in an on-campus dormitory. \;Participa nts will have single bedrooms and bathrooms but ma y share common space. The university provides basi c bedding and towels only. Please note that partic ipants should plan to bring alarm clocks\, shampoo \, hangers\, irons\, hair dryers\, etc. Participan ts will have access to computer clusters\, but man y choose to bring laptops. If you bring a laptop\, please bring an ethernet cable.\n \n \n \n Mea ls\n \n Meals will be served in a university ca feteria in space shared by other programs.
