Gallagher\, John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civi l War\, University of Virginia\n \n Overview\n \n This seminar examines the era of the American Ci vil War\, with emphasis on its origins\, scope\, a nd consequences. Through lectures\, class discussi on\, examination of historical texts\, and visits to historic sites\, the instructors and participan ts will examine the central role of slavery\, the ways in which military and civilian affairs inters ected and influenced one another\, the question of what the war left unresolved\, and how Americans have remembered the conflict. In many ways\, the i ssues that divided the nation during the Civil War era continue to resonate today. This seminar will seek to make those issues clear\, while at the sa me time providing a sense of the drama and tragedy of this tumultuous period.\n \n \n Readings\n \n Readings are sent by the Institute to semina r participants. The Union War. Cambridge: Ha rvard University Press\, 2011.\n \n \n \n Trave l &\; Accommodations\n \n The University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville\, Virginia. Two major highways\, Interstate 64 and US 29\, in tersect close to the university grounds. There are several options for traveling to and from Charlot tesville.\n \n The Charlottesville-Albemarle Ai rport (CHO) is located approximately eight miles f rom the university. Airport Shuttles are available . &ldquo\;Van on the Go&rdquo\; provides shuttle s ervice from the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport to the University of Virginia and the surrounding areas.\n \n The Charlottesville Amtrak station is located at 810 West Main Street\, approximately two miles from the university.\n \n A Greyhoun d Bus Terminal is also located in Charlottesville at 310 West Main Street\, approximately 2.15 miles from the university and close to the Historic Dow ntown Mall.\n \n For driving directions as well as further details visit the University of Virgin ia website.\n \n Workshop participants will be housed in an on-campus dormitory\, Brown College. Participants will have single bedrooms\, but shar e bathrooms and common space. Dormitories are air- conditioned with Internet service provided\, but p articipants should bring an ethernet cord. Some pa rticipants choose to bring laptops.\n \n The un iversity provides pillows\, blankets\, sheets\, an d towels only. Many participants choose to bring e xtra linens and towels. Please note that participa nts should plan to bring alarm clocks\, hangers\, irons\, hair dryers\, and shower shoes. There are a few communal kitchenettes located in the buildin g but participants should bring their own utensils . Housekeeping services are provided throughout th e week.\n \n \n \n Meals\n \n Meals will be served in a university cafeteria in space shared b y other programs. All on-campus meals will be paid for by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American H istory.\n \n \n \n Travel Reimbursement\n \n Each summer seminar participant will receive reim bursement of travel expenses up to $400. \;Par ticipants are responsible for making their own tra vel arrangements to and from the seminar.\n \n Participants traveling internationally or from Al aska and Hawaii receive a $500 stipend in lieu of reimbursement upon completion of the seminar.\n Applicants to seminars should note that supplement s will not be given in cases where the $400 allowa nce is insufficient to cover all travel expenses.\ n \n Our reimbursement policy has changed from previous years. \;For more information on our policy click here.\n \n \n \n Graduate Credit\n \n The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American Hi story is proud to announce its agreement with Adam s State University to offer three hours of graduat e credit in American history to participating semi nar teachers.
