The themes and topics to be addressed include slavery and the Old South\ ; the abolitionist impulse and the broadening anti -slavery movement\; party political realignment an d the sectional crisis of the 1850s\; evangelicali sm and politics\; the election of 1860\, the seces sion of the Lower South\, and the coming of war\; wartime leadership\, political and military\; the Civil War home front\; emancipation\; the elements of Confederate defeat and Union victory\; and the meaning of the war for American nationalism.\n \n \n Readings\n \n Readings are sent by the I nstitute to seminar participants. Battl e Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era. \;New Yor k: Oxford University Press\, 1988.\n \n \n \n T ravel &\; Accommodations\n \n To reach Oxfor d University in England\, participants may fly int o London Heathrow Airport\, Gatwick Airport\, or L ondon Stansted Airport. Each airport provides serv ice to Oxford by bus. For more information click h ere.\n \n Workshop participants will be housed at St. Catherine&rsquo\;s College. Participants wi ll have their own bedrooms but may share a bathroo m and common areas. All participants will be provi ded with linens and towels and will have access to internet within their accommodations. Some partic ipants may choose to bring laptops. Please note th at participants should plan to bring alarm clocks\ , shower shoes\, hangers\, irons\, and hair dryers . Housekeeping services are provided throughout th e week.\n \n \n \n Meals\n \n Meals will be served in a university cafeteria in space shared b y other programs. All on-campus meals will be paid for by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American H istory.\n \n \n \n Travel reimbursement\n \n Participating teachers will receive a stipend of $500 to help offset travel expenses. All participa nts must attend all workshop sessions to receive f ull stipends. Participants who do not complete the entire seminar will receive a reduced stipend. We will present stipend checks to participants prior to the end of the seminar.\n \n Stipends are t axable.
