Nash\, \;Professor and Director\, National Center for History in the Schools\, \;University of California\, Los Ang eles\n \n Overview\n \n This seminar will procee d from two premises: 1) that the Revolution had ma ny meanings to its diverse participants\; and 2) t hat its causes\, dynamics\, and outcomes have been interpreted and reinterpreted ever since. Therefo re\, we will read secondary works of various histo rians who have disagreed sharply on how to interpr et the American Revolution\; and we will examine a variety of primary documents through which we can better understand how people at the time understo od what they were fighting for and what outcomes t hey hoped to enjoy. &ldquo\;Who shall write the hi story of the American Revolution?&rdquo\; wrote Jo hn Adams to Thomas Jefferson (in 1815). &ldquo\;No body\,&rdquo\; Jefferson replied\, &ldquo\;except merely its external facts . . . The life and soul of its history must be forever unknown.&rdquo\; Al most two centuries later\, let&rsquo\;s discover t he answers to that question for ourselves.\n \n \ n Readings\n \n Readings are sent by the Inst itute to seminar participants. It is important to note that all ne arby airports offer frequently scheduled shuttle s ervice to campus or locations nearby. The universi ty \;website \;provides a detailed transpo rtation page that may help you plan your trip.\n \n Workshop participants will be housed in an on -campus dormitory. Participants will have single b edrooms\, but may share bathrooms and common space . Dormitories are air-conditioned\; wireless Inter net is service provided. Several computer clusters and lounges are available in the complex. Some pa rticipants choose to bring laptops.\n \n The un iversity provides pillows\, blankets\, sheets\, an d towels only. Please note that participants shoul d plan to bring alarm clocks\, hangers\, irons\, a nd hair dryers.\n \n \n \n Meals\n \n Meals will be served in a university cafeteria in space shared by other programs.
