McMahon\, Ralph D. Me rshon Distinguished Professor\, The Ohio State Uni versity\n \n Overview\n \n This Gilder Lehrman s eminar will explore with participating teachers tw o distinct but inseparably linked topics: American involvement in the Vietnam War\, and American soc iety during the tumultuous decade of the 1960s.\n \n The Vietnam War became the longest\, most cont roversial\, and most divisive foreign conflict in US history. It divided the American people more pr ofoundly that any event since the Civil War a cent ury earlier\, triggering a broad-based peace movem ent at home and inspiring deep social\, cultural\, and political changes&mdash\;changes that continu e to reverberate across the national landscape. Le ctures and readings will move from a broad examina tion of the roots of US involvement in the 1940s a nd 1950s and the Vietnamese context for the war to a concentration on the diplomatic and military st rategies pursued by the Kennedy\, Johnson\, and Ni xon administrations. The focus\, in this phase of the seminar\, will be on the most active years of US involvement from the early 1960s up to the Pari s Peace Agreement of January 1973. The war will be examined in terms of its overall strategic\, mili tary\, political\, economic\, and social context&m dash\;particularly in terms of its origins\, cours e\, and consequences/legacy.\n \n The seminar wil l also focus on the multiple transformations in Am erican life that occurred during the 1960s. To tha t end\, it will analyze\, among other matters\, th e Civil Rights Movement\; the New Frontier and the Great Society\; the anti-war\, New Left\, and cou nter-culture movements\; the rise of a new conserv atism\; and some of the demographic and economic c hallenges of that era. Readings will expose partic ipants to key primary sources useful for teaching this period in US history and to the lively schola rly debates that have shaped our understanding of this complex and fascinating time.
