HENRY J. HUNT was Union Chief of Artillery of the
Washington defenses during the Civil War. In the spring
of 1861, he found himself stationed on the opposite side
of enemy lines from his longtime friend and military comrade,
Confederate General Braxton Bragg. Their letters, while
affirming their mutual respect and affection, eloquently
state the reasons why each man chose his respective side.
Hunt survived the war and died in Washington DC in 1889.
