HENRY J. HUNT was Union Chief of Artillery of the Washington defenses during the Civil War. In the spring of 1861, he found himself stationed on the opposite side of enemy lines from his longtime friend and military comrade, Confederate General Braxton Bragg. Their letters, while affirming their mutual respect and affection, eloquently state the reasons why each man chose his respective side. Hunt survived the war and died in Washington DC in 1889.
