DANIEL G. WINEGAR enlisted as a private
in the 95th Illinois infantry in 1862, and his letters
bear witness to the siege of Vicksburg, the battle of
Franklin, and the capture of Mobile, as well as his own
battles with measles, dysentery, and typhoid. Winegar
survived the war and was mustered out of service in August
1865. This letter to his wife was written on their tenth
