Tuesday May 8, 1945, was 'Victory in Europe' (VE) Day,
and it marked the formal end of World War II. The final
document of unconditional surrender was signed at General
DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER's headquarters in
Reims on May 7th, and victory was celebrated on May 8th.
In this “Victory Order of the Day,” statement,
Eisenhower writes that “the crusade in which we
embarked in the early summer of 1944 has reached its glorious
conclusion…Full victory in Europe has been attained.”
