Marked copy. Captain Simmonds [possibly Seth J. Simmonds, captain in the Ohio 23rd Light Artillery] commanding the post at Gauley, West Virginia writes to Captain Avery, the Acting Assistant Adjutant General in the 23rd Ohio, about a scouting expedition. States that there is a rumor among Confederate citizens that Confederate troops are being transferred to Kentucky to reinforce "Joe Johnson," [Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston]. Says that the 22nd Regiment of the Confederate Army was moving yesterday and the destination was probably Kentucky.
