Commission to "Captain of the Union Rifles" for a term of six years. Signed by Governor Oliver S. Morton on April 22, 1861. Also signed by Indiana Secretary of State William A. Peele and countersigned by Lew Wallace, the Adjutant General of the Indiana Militia. On verso is printed "An act to organize the militia, providing for the appointment, and prescribing the duties of certain officers thereof", which suggests a system for naming regiments as recommended by the Adjutant General. Signed at bottom and on verso by Joseph H. Blake of Vigo County, Indiana. Features engraved seal of the Court of Vigo County.
