Portrait of a Negro Man [Olaudah Equiano?], c. 1780. Oil on canvas. Attributed to Allan Ramsay. Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, UK / Bridgeman Art Library.

This painting of an elegantly-dressed and impressive black man has long been thought to depict Olaudah Equiano, the former slave who published his autobiography in 1789 to support the abolitionist struggle being led in Parliament by William Wilberforce.
