Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

House of Representatives mis. doc. no. 119. (34th Congress, 1st session). Bartlett, Secretary of State for Rhode Island, certifies these to be a true copy of resolutions passed in by the Rhode Island Legislature in May. Reprinted by Congress June 1856. Condemns Senator Preston Brooks's attack on Charles Sumner in May 1856 and violence recently inflicted on residents of Kansas by border ruffians.
