Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Photograph of a suspect later identified as Ernest Hartman Richter. Shows Richter sitting with his hands folded and wearing a coat aboard the U.S.S. Saugus. The photograph is mounted on board.

One of of the eight suspected conspirators who had been incarcerated on the monitors (Saugus and Montauk). Richter, a cousin of Atzerodt was released without being brought to trial.
