At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Julia Piatt, 29 July 1862, Washington, D.C. Conway was an American author and preacher, and ardent abolitionist. He lectured in England during the Civil War in the interests of the North. The Golden Hour is a plea for the emancipation of slaves in the form of a novel. Published by Ticknor and Fields, Boston.
