At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brief prepared on behalf of the United States for reargument by Attorney General Herbert Brownell, J. Lee Rankin, Philip Elman, and other attorneys at the Justice Department. Devoted to information regarding the case of Oliver Brown, et. al. v. Board of Education of Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas, et. al. Title mentions four other cases. Includes a preface discussing the Fourteenth Amendment with respect to its effect on racial segregation in public schools. Contains five sections exploring the limits of judicial power in deciding the constitutionality of racial segregation in public schools. Discusses public education during and after the reconstruction period and the history and debates surrounding the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments. Also outlines "actions, federal and state, bearing on school segregation," that were discussed by the legislature during and after the passage of the Amendments. Herbert Brownell, Jr. (1904-1996) was Attorney General during the Eisenhower administration. He was well-known as a vocal supporter of civil rights.
