Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requests Cotterell inform her whether or not she has an appointment at court that day with King George III and the Queen. She and John Adams were requesting their leave of the court as he had been called back to America. Undated, date inferred from events.

From 1785 to 1788 John Adams was minister to the Court of St. James's and returned to America to be elected Vice President under George Washington.
