Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Offers a collection of documents related to the controversy surrounding the sale of the Friar Lands in the Philippines in circa 1902. Has shown these letters to R. W. G. Vail of the Roosevelt Memorial House, who has told him the collection would "bring a goodly sum of money." Was offered $1,500 for the collection a few years ago.
