Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Vignette bust portrait with small beard and mustache. Name and rank inscribed on recto below photograph.

Hill enlisted as a Private on 6 August 1862 at the age of 23. He entered Company H, 10th Heavy Artillery Regiment New York on 14 August 1862. He was promoted to Full Sergeant on 12 September 1862.
