Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Nine officers and enlistedmen stand in front of a log cabin with a chimney made from barrels. Behind them, two men hold the [2nd Division] 3rd Corps flag, a triangular flag with a white diamond in the center. There are five contraband men in the background. Inscription on recto: "Hd.Qrs.
