Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed membership certificate signed by Madison as President and R. R. Gurley as Secretary. The American Colonization Society resettled freed black slaves in Liberia. D.B. Mattern letter 6/14/96, Madison accepted the presidency per his 19 February 1833 letter to Gurley (although it is a little equivocal); dating based on a 11/30/1833 letter from JM enclosing signed certificates (they may have been post-dated). Previous dating based on a certificate signed by JM as President, dated 1/1/1834 for Thomas H. Hulback offered by University Archive catalog #120. See correspondence in collateral file with copies.
