Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph entitled, "Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter, Gettysburg taken by Alexander Gardner dated July 1863. Image is of a corpse of a Confederate Army soldier. Gardner includes a brief vignette in which he describes visiting the site four months after the battle to find the soldier's "skeleton" still laying there, undisturbed and fully uniformed.
