Policies and Ordering Instructions
The Collection offers photocopying and digital photography services. All requests must be submitted in writing. We accept small orders for photocopies of individual unbound manuscripts in good condition. To avoid damaging fragile materials, The Gilder Lehrman Collection will not photocopy bound books or manuscripts, photographs, original art work, or large numbers of manuscripts. The Collection may produce digital reproductions of these materials depending upon the condition of the item requested. Please note that some materials, however, may be too fragile to be subjected to any duplication process.
If no digital file exists, the price for reproductions will include the cost of making one. Copies and images of items in the Collection should not be deposited in other library collections without the approval of the appropriate curator.
Patrons must identify and select all material they wish to request for duplication. Please be aware that we can fill large or complex orders only as the demands of serving the Reading Room permit. Additional charges may apply.
Upon receipt of your order, an itemized statement of services will be prepared. Advance payment by check is required for all orders. Checks can be made payable to The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and should include the order number on the check and on all correspondence concerning the request. Discounts are available for educators, high school students, and non-profit institutions.
International customers paying by check must send payment in US dollars drawn on a United States bank. There is a minimum charge of $20.00 for international orders, including postage and insurance.
All orders will be fulfilled electronically, unless otherwise specified. All domestic mail is sent first class unless otherwise specified. All international mail is sent air mail printed matter, unless otherwise specified. All invoices are to be remitted to The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, 170 Central Park West, New York, NY 10024.
Turnaround time is dependent upon the number of requests received and on the complexity of individual orders. Requests are processed in the order in which they are received. Please allow at least 6-8 weeks for the completion of your order. Rush services are available for an additional fee.
The Gilder Lehrman Collection’s sale of a reproduction does not imply an authorization to publish it. Applicants must obtain such permission from the copyright holder as well as from Gilder Lehrman.
