Three Mile Island
Three Mile Island, in the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was the site of a major nuclear power station accident on March 28, 1979. That morning the Three Mile Island nuclear power station experienced a reactor core shutdown and partial meltdown. Some hydrogen and radioactive gases leaked into the atmosphere. Though the environmental and health effects of Three Mile Island were minimal, the accident sparked major fears about the safety of nuclear energy and reactors. Several other reactors were temporarily closed.
