Uncle Sam Making New Arrangements
(Currier & Ives, 1860, GLC 03488)

This black and white cartoon portrays Abraham Lincoln being hired by Uncle Sam while John Bell, J.C. Breckinridge, and Stephen Douglas are turned away. James Buchanan, Lincoln's predecessor, is seen in the establishment packing up his dirty laundry.

This cartoon was probably created shortly after Lincoln was elected as the nation's 16th president in 1860. Lincoln received 180 electoral votes while his closest challenger, Southern Democrat Breckenridge, received only 72.
