Grand National Union Banner for 1864
(GLC 04681)
This hand-colored lithograph of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson was created for the 1864 presidential election campaign. In it, busts of Lincoln and Johnson are circled in wreaths, with a theatre curtain backdrop and adorned with patriotic images of flags and eagles.
The National Union Party unanimously elected Abraham Lincoln
to represent their party during the 1864 campaign which
took place in the midst of the Civil War. Initially it
looked as if Lincoln might lose the election, because
the war wasn't going well. Democratic candidate General
McClellan ran on a peace platform and criticized Lincoln
and the National Union Party for their stance on slavery.
However, on November 8, Lincoln received 51% of the popular
vote and ultimately received the necessary number of electoral
votes to win the election.
