Lincoln Drafting the Emancipation Proclamation
(GLC 0493.03)
In this anti-Lincoln sketch, an inebriated Lincoln is surrounded by symbols of
Satanism and paintings honoring John Brown and slave rebellions.
Under Lincoln's foot is a copy of the Constitution, a
reference to what many perceived as Lincoln's abuse of
executive power.
The artist, Adalbert Johann Volck, was born in 1828 what
was then Bavaria and came to America to avoid military
service. After living in Boston and St. Louis Volck settled
in Baltimore and, after attending the Baltimore College
of Dental Surgery, established himself as a dentist in
that city. Like Volck, most of his patients were pro-Southern
and at the onset of the Civil War Volck became a supporter
of the Confederate cause.
