Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Depicts Logan, his wife Mary, and his children Mary Elizabeth "Dollie," and John Alexander Logan, Jr. A note on verso, written in pen, indicates that this photo was taken when John Logan, Jr., was five years old (1870). Remarkably clear, depicting the family seated together. Possibly created in Washington, D.C.

John Logan, Jr. was killed at San Jacinto, Philippine Islands, 1899. John A. Logan had one other son, John Cunningham Logan, who was born in 1856 lived for only one year. Logan served as a United States General from Illinois 1859-1862 and 1867-1870, and as Senator 1871-1876 and 1879-1886. He was also a general during the Civil War.
