At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The account records expenditures for shoes and the repair of shoes. On p.2 Smithsen acknowledges receipt of payment for the delivery of wheat and the boarding of Gilbert Livingston's daughter Alida from 1 April 1725 to 1 April 1726. Docketed on verso.
